Austria – Swimming, Relaxation, Health

Austria is often associated by Polish tourists with winter skiing trips. But what if you’re not a fan of gliding down the slopes and are instead drawn to water adventures, seeking adrenaline-filled aquatic experiences or simply looking to relax and unwind in stunning natural surroundings? One thing is certain: if you’re heading to Austria for a winter holiday, don’t forget to pack the accessories that will allow you to indulge in your passion for swimming, whether in an extreme or recreational and relaxing way.

Known as the “Land of Water,” Austria boasts over 700 waterfalls, 25,000 standing bodies of water, and countless small mountain springs and wild streams.

The beauty and natural power of water can be experienced on nearly every trip. Winter swimming and ice bathing are just as popular in Austria as traditional skiing.

From Vienna, through Upper Austria, Carinthia, and all the way to Tyrol, a wide range of tourist options is available for adventure enthusiasts looking to embrace cold water, as well as for those seeking health and relaxation in thermal pools and spa facilities.

AUSTRIA

Austria, often referred to as the Alpine Republic, is a federal country located in the southeastern part of Europe. The nation is composed of nine provinces (Länder), where German is the official language and the euro is the currency. Tourists visiting Austria must have an identity document, such as a passport or an ID card.

Winter Swimming and Ice Bathing in Austria – A Burst of Endorphins Beyond Skiing

From cold dips in lakes, streams, or rivers to swimming in glacial waters, Austria offers some of the best spots for ice bathing recommended by locals. Popular locations include the Danube River, Almsee Lake, and the Pleschinger and Ausee Lakes near Linz. Naturally, this activity is allowed only where legal and in designated winter swimming areas.

One example is Afritzersee Lake, located just a short drive from the popular ski resort Bad Kleinkirchheim (don’t miss sledding while you’re there!). Another well-known spot, particularly among Polish winter swimmers and open-water athletes, is Wörthersee Lake, where swimming competitions are held.

For those interested in trying winter kayaking, trips are organized on Achensee Lake and the Lechweg River—one of Europe’s last wild rivers.

WATER THERAPY in Austria

Austria takes pride in the legacy of Sebastian Kneipp (1821–1897), a "priest, herbalist," and 18th-century hydrotherapist from Bavaria. Kneipp believed that water holds healing power; it is the simplest, most affordable, and—when used correctly—the safest medicine.

Sebastian Kneipp advocated for the health benefits of alternating hot and cold showers, immersing hands in cold water, and ice baths as particularly effective methods for improving circulation and strengthening the immune system. Today, many wellness centers offer programs based on the specialized therapeutic approach developed by Kneipp and his successors.

Relaxation and Wellness in Austria – Not Just with Cold Water!

When visiting Austria, be sure to explore the rich spa offerings of its regions. Most ski resorts or their nearby areas feature attractive wellness centers where you can enjoy health-boosting baths and relax wonderfully.

You could say that Austria is a true paradise for swimmers and water enthusiasts. While packing your bags, make sure to bring your swimwear (swimsuit or swim trunks), goggles, earplugs, a highly absorbent towel, and a swim cap. You might find yourself swimming and bathing far more often than skiing during your winter holiday.

Note: Before engaging in any water-based activities, consult your doctor and ensure the treatment or physical activity is suitable for you!
