How to Choose Swimming Goggles – A Practical Guide

Goggles with clear, tinted, colored, photochromic, or mirrored lenses? Or perhaps with an interchangeable nose piece or a flexible nose bridge? Ones with a strap that adjusts via a standard buckle or with a QuickFit or EasyFit mechanism for easier adjustment? What size and color should you choose? Here’s our guide to help you select the perfect swimming goggles so you can feel... like a fish in water, whether in the pool or open water.

Swimming Goggles for Pools and Open Water – Are They Really Necessary?

Swimming goggles are not mandatory equipment, but in practice, they are essential for protecting the eyes from bacteria, viruses, chlorine, and other chemicals used to treat pool water, as well as pollen, allergens, or pollutants found in open water.

They provide clear vision while swimming, allowing swimmers to fully enjoy the sport, focus on refining technique, breathing, racing in competitions, or covering long distances. However, to achieve this, it’s important to first select the right size and ensure the goggles fit properly to the size and shape of the face and the structure of the eye/eye socket.

Swimming Goggles – How to Choose Them Correctly

The first step is deciding on the type of goggles. This depends on your needs and intended use:

  • for recreational swimming
  • for intensive swim training
  • for open-water swimming, including triathlon and winter swimming
  • for pool competitions

The next step is finding the right size and model of goggles, but… let’s start from the beginning.

Universal Goggles – For Recreation, Long Training Sessions, Open Water, or Winter Swimming

A wide, silicone* gasket ensures the lenses fit snugly against the face, regardless of water or air temperature. Thanks to the soft, flexible seal, these comfortable swimming goggles don’t press too tightly or irritate the skin.

  • They are ideal for extended sessions at the pool, whether for recreational or training purposes
  • They also perform exceptionally well during long open-water swims

FALCON PHOTOCHROMIC goggles are a perfect choice for the AQUA SPEED Open Water Series and other open-water competitions in Poland.

Swimming Goggles

Swimming goggles are specially designed for the increasingly popular sport of winter swimming. They feature a wide, stable, and easily adjustable seal that remains effective even in water temperatures close to zero degrees Celsius.

These goggles protect the sinuses from cold water, providing comfort for winter swimmers.

Swimming goggles are ideal for winter swimming, for example, during events like the largest winter swimming series in Poland – Ice Cup Poland. You can find coverage of the event in AQUA SPEED Magazine.

* In addition to silicone, other materials used for swimming goggle seals include TPR (Thermoelastic Rubber), which is slightly stiffer than silicone, and LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber), which is softer, more flexible, and significantly more resistant to damage caused by water, UV rays, and aging compared to traditional silicone.

"Swedes" – Goggles for Professionals and Masters

Due to their design, these goggles cater to the needs of professional swimmers, for whom speed in the water is a top priority.

You’ll mainly see competitive swimmers and Masters swimmers wearing Swedes—former athletes who now swim as a serious hobby. Interested in why you should consider becoming a Masters swimmer? Check out the article in AQUA SPEED Magazine.

These goggles could be described as custom-made, as they allow users to assemble the individual components (lenses, connecting string, and strap are purchased separately according to personal preferences) into a complete pair of goggles.

One-Piece or Adjustable Goggles with a Streamlined Shape – For Competitive Swimmers Who Value Comfort

Designed for intensive training and professional or semi-professional swimming, these goggles combine the efficiency of "Swedes" (commonly used in competitions) with the comfort of soft goggles.

The ergonomic shape and snug-fitting seals made from high-durability silicone allow swimmers to push their limits while maintaining maximum comfort. Swimmers can choose between one-piece or adjustable models.

Thanks to their design, materials, and lens shape—providing a wide field of vision—these goggles are ideal for open-water competitions, where keeping an eye on nearby competitors is crucial.

For pool competitions, well-fitted goggles won’t disappoint during dynamic dives from the starting blocks or flip turns.

Swimming Goggles – Size Matters

The correct size is a crucial factor when choosing swimming goggles. If the goggles you’ve picked are not the right size, you’ll need to look for another pair that fits properly, as ill-fitting goggles make swimming not only uncomfortable but often impossible.

  • The strap and nose bridge are often interchangeable or adjustable, allowing you to precisely fit the goggles to your face
  • The lens size should match the size of your eye socket, as this is the only part of the goggles whose size cannot be adjusted
  • The lenses should fully cover the eyes, and when pressed against the face without using the strap, they should stick for a few seconds
  • If the lenses fall off immediately, they’re too large. If they feel tight or dig into the skin when pressed, they’re too small

A Strap for Special Tasks

Every strap on swimming goggles serves to keep them securely on your head. Typically made of silicone or modern silicone-based materials, the strap may also be split into two narrower bands. This double-strap design is especially popular among swimmers with long hair, as it helps keep the goggles in place more effectively.

How to position the goggle strap on your head? It’s simple!

  • Place the lower part of the strap parallel to the goggles' lenses.
  • Position the upper part of the strap at roughly a 45-degree angle.

This setup ensures the upper strap pulls the lenses snugly against the eye sockets, improving the goggles' seal and fit.

Swimming Goggles – Important Features for Added Comfort

In addition to optimal face fit, swimming goggles can include a range of features that enhance comfort and usability:

  • Anti-fog coating – Prevents fogging of the lenses caused by sudden temperature changes, such as surfacing from the water. Fogged lenses are a common issue, often requiring swimmers to rinse and adjust their goggles repeatedly. Anti-fog coatings solve this problem.
  • UV filter – Protects the eyes from strong sunlight during outdoor swimming. This feature is now standard in most high-quality swimming goggles.
  • Polarization – Eliminates horizontal light reflections from the water’s surface, significantly improving contrast and visibility.
  • Mirrored lenses – Reflect excess sunlight and enhance color clarity without reducing visibility. They are particularly useful for swimming in outdoor pools and natural bodies of water.
  • Photochromic lenses – Adjust their tint based on sunlight exposure, darkening in bright conditions.
  • Prescription lenses for children and adults – Include corrective lenses that can be customized to each eye’s specific prescription. These goggles also allow for adjusting the distance between the lenses with interchangeable nose bridges of varying sizes. Available corrections range from -8.0 to -1.5 (with increments of 0.5 diopters between -1.5 and -5.5, and increments of 1 diopter between -6.0 and -8.0).
Note: It is possible to order goggles with two lenses of different corrections by specifying this requirement when placing the order.

Every type of swimming goggles used in the pool requires proper care. Most models come with a pouch or case for safe storage, which is especially important for the anti-fog coating. This coating is quite delicate and can wear off quickly with improper use. While it can be restored using special products, this process needs to be repeated as the restored coating is less durable than the original.

NEW! We’ve created a special, rigid case for the safe storage of swimming goggles. This case is available with the FALCON PHOTOCHROMIC and VORTEX MIRROR goggles.
