Oceanman Gdańsk – Polish Open Water with an International Flair
For many open water swimmers in Poland, participating in an Oceanman event was a dream come true. The growing number of competitions organized worldwide continues to capture the imagination of athletes. The first event in the series, held in Gdańsk, attracted both elite swimmers and open water enthusiasts eager to include this milestone in their sporting resumes. The Polish edition of the event was organized by the Worthersee Swim association, whose representative we had the pleasure of interviewing.
How did the idea of organizing an open water competition come about, who is behind the project, and what is its history?
Open water swimming is still a developing sport in Poland. To emphasize the importance of this discipline in this part of Europe, we decided to organize an international swimming event as part of the Oceanman series. The main organizer of the event is the Worthersee Swim association, which, in coordination with the global Oceanman representatives, successfully hosted the competition.
Who Can Participate in the Competition... and Is It Really Just About Competing?
These events are open to both children and adults. They bridge the worlds of amateur and professional swimming, making them not just about competition, but also about forming new connections, exchanging experiences, and setting new challenges that motivate further growth.
Will Every Swimmer Enjoy Open Water Swimming? Is Open Water Swimming "More Fun" Than Pool Swimming?
I think it’s hard to give a definitive answer because open water swimming is characterized by a completely different environment and distances. It’s not confined by pool walls, and you have to be ready for anything. It also requires a lot of courage, as you often can’t see the bottom, and the water temperature isn’t always favorable. However, it offers a sense of freedom and connection with nature, making it a beautiful sport that will undoubtedly bring joy to long-distance swimmers who love fresh air and the great outdoors!
What Makes Your Event Different from Other Open Water Competitions in Poland?
Oceanman is an international event that took place for the first time in our country this year. Other editions are held in various parts of the world, where participants can qualify for the Oceanman World Championships. This opportunity was also available at the Oceanman Gdańsk event. Qualified individuals will have the chance to compete in Greece at the final edition.
Is There an Open Water Event in the World That Inspires You, a Role Model?
In fact, the inspiration comes from other Oceanman events held worldwide.

We encourage you to participate in other events from the Oceanman series.
