Slow Swimming – a trendy idea!

Is open water swimming just about races during competitions? Definitely not! It’s primarily about experiencing the water and the many gifts of nature, discovering your own potential, overcoming personal barriers, and building relationships… even a sense of community. We discuss the concept of slow swimming with Grzegorz Kumiszcz from the Zahartowani Sports Club.

Slow Swimming

Is slow swimming a kind of swimming philosophy inspired by slow jogging, or is it more of a swimming technique?

The idea of slow swimming is to enjoy the act of swimming itself. During events, we don’t race or compete against each other. Slow swimming can also serve as a form of relaxation, a way to refine swimming techniques, recover after intense competition, or even explore the surroundings.

Swimming as a Way to Unwind

Is swimming an activity for individualists, or quite the opposite?

Swimming can be a perfect way to spend quiet, solitary time with yourself. For example, I personally prefer swimming early in the morning (even though I really dislike waking up at 5:00). Water can be a wonderful place for those seeking tranquility, offering respite from the noise and chaos of daily life. Of course, swimming can also absolutely be a social activity, especially when it involves others. Group activities are a great motivator. Many people use swimming as an opportunity to meet up with friends or a training group.

Water Safety and Learning to Swim

Why is it important to learn how to swim and gain knowledge about water safety?

There are many reasons why it’s worthwhile, but I believe the most important one is safety. Learning to swim and understanding how to behave in water are fundamental skills necessary for spending time near bodies of water. Anyone who knows how to swim has a better chance of surviving unexpected situations.

Swimming is also an excellent form of physical activity that engages multiple muscle groups and is gentle on the joints. Regular swimming can improve endurance, strength, and flexibility, while also contributing to overall well-being. Learning to swim and acquiring water safety skills bring numerous benefits. Whether you pursue it for safety, enjoyment, or participation in competitive challenges, swimming is a valuable and versatile skill.

Swimming on Vacation and Beyond

Swimming can also be a great excuse for summer travels. How can you prepare physically, logistically, and gear-wise to enjoy unforgettable swimming adventures in Poland?

To prepare for swimming adventures during the holidays, it’s worth considering three key aspects: physical, organizational, and equipment-related. Physical preparation involves regular training to strengthen your fitness, endurance, and swimming technique before the trip. In addition to swimming, it's a good idea to focus on general physical conditioning by doing exercises that build muscle strength and improve stamina. For organizing your trip, social media can be a valuable resource, as numerous swimming groups from across Poland are active there. Joining one of these groups and asking questions can provide helpful tips. Of course, I warmly invite you to visit Ełk!

Essential Gear for Open Water Swimming

When it comes to swimming equipment, the prevailing opinion is that a recreational swimmer's basic kit should include swimwear, a towel, and goggles, with additional items like a mask, snorkel, or fins as optional. Personally, I’d rather be in the water without swimwear than without a safety buoy [smile]. I strongly advocate for swimming with buoys and believe they should be an essential part of every water enthusiast’s gear.

How often do we hear about a good swimmer drowning relatively close to shore? The reasons can vary: cramps, fainting, getting tangled in seaweed or fishing nets, and many other causes. Grabbing onto a simple inflatable buoy could save a life, offering a moment to rest or wait for help.

Ełk – The Capital of Swimming

Ełk is becoming the capital of open water swimming, thanks to the “Zahartowani” team.

In July, we had the opportunity to experience slow swimming — a 10-kilometer swim across Lake Ełk. Throughout the summer, the “Swimming Patrol” initiative has been in full swing, and soon Grzegorz Kumiszcza and his team will be inviting swimmers to tackle truly long distances in the Masurian region. Get ready, because the Great Masurian Lakes Crown project promises an incredible adventure with excellent company and professional organization!
