Why is it worth learning to swim and improving this skill? Because it allows you to embark on amazing adventures and meet incredible people! Filip Wypych (swimmer, Olympian) and Lisa Kmin, a trainee of Feel The Water, talk about the significance of swimming competitions in pools and open water.
As part of the collaboration between AQUA SPEED and Feel The Water, we met Filip and Lisa during the “Filip Wypych Sprint Cup” competition, where AQUA SPEED was a partner. Later, a large part of the Feel The Water team participated in our AQUA SPEED Open Water Series!
Learning to Swim and Water Safety
Why do you think every child learning to swim should compete in open water events?
Filip Wypych: I believe every child learning to swim should participate in open water competitions because it’s a lot of fun! Moreover, competing in such events allows children to apply the skills they’ve learned in the pool to open water – lakes, rivers, or the sea.
This is extremely important for developing higher levels of water safety skills in open environments.
In a pool, the conditions are always the same – four walls, a bottom, clear water. In open water, conditions are variable, with currents and usually limited visibility once you submerge your head. We want our students to know how to behave in such environments and what they might encounter, for instance, if they fall out of a boat.
