Swimming Accessories to Enhance Training Efficiency

Referring to the definition of "sports training," it can be described as exercises performed to improve proficiency in a chosen sport. The seemingly monotonous practice of swimming "from wall to wall" in a pool forms the foundation of swim training, essential for achieving decent results not only in the pool but also in open water. However, diversifying training and enhancing a swimmer's performance can also be achieved through the use of carefully selected swimming accessories. This makes training more varied and effective.

How to Prepare for Swim Training?

To begin with, it’s important to have well-fitted swimming goggles that don’t leak or press uncomfortably around the eyes.

  • Next, a reliable swim cap is essential. It should stay on securely without creating drag.
  • Silicone swim caps are highly recommended, as they fit the shape of the head flexibly, don’t pinch, and even accommodate long hair.
  • A nose clip is another useful accessory that can come in handy during training. One common issue in swimming is water entering the nose, which is related to the swimmer's ability (or lack thereof) to exhale while the head is submerged. The choice of a nose clip should also depend on the swimmer’s comfort, as there are many types available on the market. The most popular designs today are made entirely of plastic and fit snugly over the nostrils, with the connecting clip aligning perfectly along the bridge of the nose. If you choose this type of equipment, it’s worth considering attaching the nose clip to a string that can be fastened to your swimsuit or worn around the neck like a necklace. This prevents the clip from getting lost in the water.

Swimming Comfort Equals More Efficient Training

If the basic equipment is comfortable, swimmers can focus on technique and the quality of their exercises, which in turn improves the efficiency of their training. It’s essential to consider what aspects of your swimming you want to improve. Answering this question will help you select specialized training equipment, such as swim paddles, fins, or a pull buoy.

Choosing a Pull Buoy

All pull buoys look similar, shaped like the number eight, but they differ in small details. The best choice depends largely on the swimmer's comfort.

  • Type I: A pull buoy with evenly sized lobes, which is the standard and most popular model of this accessory.
  • Type II: A pull buoy with lobes of different sizes. Many swimmers find this design more stable between the legs and better suited for a wider range of exercises.

To increase leg buoyancy during exercises, place the pull buoy with the larger end down. For other types of drills, adjust its position accordingly.

Pull buoys are versatile training tools used for various technical exercises. They can be used for swimming with just the arms or just the legs, helping swimmers improve their body position in the water.

Swim Paddles – Strength and Technique Training

Another essential item for every swimmer, whether amateur or professional, is swim paddles, also known as hand paddles. Like a kickboard, swim paddles are valuable for technical drills and strength training. However, beginners should start with smaller paddles and gradually increase their size over time.

Paddles that attach only to the fingers are particularly noteworthy. They are excellent tools for improving stroke efficiency and water feel.

Training Fins – A Must-Have

Leg work is an important aspect of swimming training, and training fins help stabilize the swimmer’s body in the water while increasing speed. There are three main types of fins for training purposes:

  • Long fins (not to be confused with diving fins): Recommended for long-distance training, they encourage greater flexibility in the ankle joint. Unlike diving fins, which can cause knee bending and improper leg movement, long training fins support correct leg technique.
  • Short fins: Recommended for sprinters, these are commonly used for short, high-intensity intervals. They are lighter than long fins and ideal for speed-focused training.
  • Monofins: These require both legs to move simultaneously. Although heavy, they are excellent for synchronizing leg movements for the dolphin kick.

When choosing fins, consider their stiffness as well. For beginners, soft fins are recommended. As swimmers gain proficiency using fins, they can transition to stiffer ones, which allow for faster swimming and improved ankle flexibility.

Snorkel – Not Just for Diving

A swimming snorkel has become a very popular piece of equipment in recent years. Unlike a diving snorkel, its mouthpiece is positioned at the front of the face rather than to the side. This makes it an excellent tool for both technical and endurance training.

Training Will Never Be Boring Again

When your swim gear bag is filled with swimming accessories, the hours spent at the pool will become significantly more engaging and productive. A well-planned training session will be more varied and effective.

However, it’s important to remember that when introducing new equipment, you should gradually increase the intensity of your exercises. Consulting with a swim instructor or coach is highly recommended to avoid unnecessary injuries.
